Saucony Shoe Manufacturing Company was founded in 1898 and the name is rooted from the Saucony Creek in Kutztown, Pennsylvania. The native inhabitants of these lands translate the name Saucony as “mouth of a creek or river.” In 1906 the company built its first factory along the Saucony Creek. The devotion of the company to the place of its first location can be seen even in its logo: it, according to the company, “represents the endless flow of that waterway, along with its boulder-strewn creek bed, depicted by the three distinct dots within the brand’s “river” mark.”

In 1910 the company was producing 800 pairs of shoes a day and specialized in children’s shoes, but also manufactured functional adult footwear. At the same time Abraham Hyde opened a shoe store on the Charles River in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The store was producing and selling “carpet slippers” made from rug remnants, however, in 30 years the company’s product line has broadened and now included baseball shoes, roller boots, and bowling shoes. During 1960s the company worked as a supplier of NASA. The boots for the first American astronaut to walk in space were produced by the company.

 In 1968 Saucony Shoe Manufacturing Company was producing running shoes. Abraham Hyde purchased Saucony Shoe Manufacturing Company and moved its headquarters to Cambridge. Running shoes by the company were mainly worn by enthusiast sportsmen, but in 1977 the company’s products received an award for “Best Quality” by a U.S. magazine. The company’s history says, that “the resulting publicity established the Saucony name and its ongoing reputation for high quality performance athletic footwear.”

The running industry recognizes the products by Saucony for their innovation, technical leadership and quality product. They have, for instance, received “Editor’s Choice” awards form Runner’s World magazine and were also called “International Best Innovation”.
